STARTING AND OPERATING
If The Engin e Fails To Start
If the engine fails to start after you have follow ed the
“Norm al Starting” proced ure, it may be flood ed. Push
the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and hold it
there while cranking the engine. This shou ld clear any
excess fuel in case the engine is flood ed.

NEVER pour fuel or other flam mable liq uids into
the throttle body air inlet opening in an attem pt to
start the vehicle. This could resu lt in a flash fire
causing seriou s person al injury.
CAUTIO N!
DO NOT attem pt to push or tow your vehicle to get
it started . Vehicles equipped with an automatic
tran smission cannot be started this way. Unburned
fuel could enter the catalytic converter and once the
engine has started , ignite and damage the converter
and vehicle.
To preven t damage to the starter, DO NOT cran k the
engin e for more than 15–secon d intervals at one tim e.
Wait 10 to 15 secon ds before tryin g again .
If the engine has been flood ed, it may start to run, but not
have enou gh power to continu e running when the key is
released . If this occurs, continu e cranking with the accel-
erator pedal pushed all the way to the floor. Release the
accelerator pedal and the key once the engine is running
smoothly.

If the vehicle has a discharged battery, booster
cables may be used to obtain a start from a booster
battery or the battery in another vehicle. This type
of start can be dangerou s if done improperly. Refer
to Section 6 of this manual for proper jump-startin g
proced ures and follow them carefu lly.
