while the ignition switch is in the ON position. Alw ays
press the brake pedal first before moving the gear selec-
tor lever out of PARK.
NOTE: If a malfunction occurs, the system will trap the
key in the ignition cylind er to warn you that this safety
featu re is inop erable. The engine can be started and
stop ped but the key cannot be rem oved until you obtain
service.
Autom atic Transmission Ign ition Interlock System
For electrical system malfunctions, there is an overrid e
for the interlock system . In ord er to overrid e this system ,
rem ove the cover located to the top right of the gear
selector lever in the instru ment panel. The overrid e can
be activated by pressing the white-colored tab, which can
be accessed throu gh the hole in the instru ment panel.
While the overrid e is pressed , the gear selector lever can
be moved out of the PARK position withou t pressing the
brake pedal. After operation, retu rn the cover to its
original position.
Four-Speed or Six-Speed Automatic
Transmission
The electronically controlled transm ission provid es a
precise shift sched ule. The transm ission electronics are 5
self-calibrating; therefore, the first few shifts on a new
vehicle may be som ewhat abru pt. This is a norm al
cond ition, and precision shifts will develop within a few
hu nd red miles (kilom eters).
The transm ission has only PRND shift positions. Dow n-
shifts are carried out by an Electronic Range Select (ERS)
by moving the lever — / + while in the DRIVE position,
This system prevents the key from being rem oved unless
the gear selector lever is in PARK. It also prevents shifting
the gear selector lever out of PARK unless the key is in
the LOCK/ OFF or ON positions.
