accep tab le lim its, the veh icle computer will overrid e
DRIVE and select “5” ran ge (on six-sp eed tran smis-
sion s) or “3” ran ge (on fou r-sp eed tran smission s) by
changin g shift poin ts. This is done to preven t tran s-
mission damage due to overh eatin g.
DRIVE — Four-Sp eed Transmission
This range shou ld be used for most city and highw ay
driving. It provid es the smoothest upshifts, downshifts,
and best fuel econom y. However, select the “3” range
when frequ ent transm ission shifting occurs while using
the DRIVE range, such as when operating the vehicle
und er heavy load ing cond itions, (i.e., in hilly terrain,
traveling into strong head wind s or while tow ing heavy
trailers). Und er these cond itions, using the “3” range will
improve perform ance and extend transm ission life by
red ucing excessive shifting and heat build-up.

Electron ic Ran ge Select (ERS) Operation
The Electronic Range Select (ERS) shift control allow s
you to move the gear selector lever to the left (-) or right
(+)
when the gear selector lever is in the D (Drive)
position, this allow s the selection of the desired top gear.
For exam ple, if the driver shifts the transm ission into 3rd
gear, the transm ission will never shift above 3rd gear, but
can shift down to 2nd or 1st gear autom atically, when
need ed.
