It is dangerou s to shift the gear selector lever out of
PARK or NEUTRAL if the engin e speed is high er
than idle speed . If you r foot is not firm ly on the
brak e pedal, the veh icle could accelerate quickly
forw ard or in reverse. You could lose control of the
veh icle and hit som eon e or som eth ing. Only shift
into gear when the engin e is idlin g norm ally and
when you r righ t foot is firm ly on the brak e pedal.
Damage to the tran smission may occur if the follow -
ing precau tion s are not observed :

Shift the gear selector lever into PARK only after
the veh icle has come to a complete stop .
Do not shift the gear selector lever from RE-
VERSE, PARK, or NEUTRAL into any forw ard
gear when the engin e is above idle speed .

Before shiftin g the gear selector lever into any
gear, make sure you r foot is firm ly on the brak e
pedal.
Brake/Transmission Interlock System
This system hold s the shift lever in the PARK position
when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position. It also
prevents you , once the engine is started , from moving the
gear selector lever out of PARK and into any gear unless
the brake pedal is pressed . This system is active only
NOTE: You MUST press and hold the brake pedal down
while shifting out of PARK.
