Terrain
The terrain (hilly, mou ntainou s, tall bu ildings) of the area over
which the signal travels may prevent the FM signal from being
noise-free.
If there is a bu ilding or large stru ctu re betw een the antenna and
station, som e of the signal ”bend s“ arou nd the bu ilding, bu t
certain spots receive alm ost no signal. Moving ou t of the
”
shad ow “ of the stru ctu re will allow the station to retu rn to
norm al.
When the rad io waves are reflected off objects or stru ctu res, the
reflected signal cancels the norm al signal, cau sing the antenna to
pick up noise and distortion. Cancellation effects are most
prom inent in metrop olitan areas, bu t also can becom e qu ite
severe in hilly terrain and depressed road ways.
To minim ize these cond itions, a stereo/ mono blend circu it has
been incorp orated into this system . This featu re au tom atically
switches a weak stereo signal to a clearer monau ral signal,
which improves the qu ality of recep tion.
Several sou rces of static are norm al cond itions on AM
frequ encies. These can be cau sed by pow er lines, electric fences,
traffic lights and thu nd erstorm s.
Another recep tion phenom enon is Stron g Sign al Cap ture and
Overload . This can occur when listening to a weak station and
when passing another broad cast tow er. The close station may
cap tu re the more distant station, althou gh the displayed
frequ ency does not change. While passing the tow er, the station
may switch back and forth a few tim es before retu rning to the
original station.
When several broad cast tow ers are present (com mon in
metrop olitan areas) several stations may overload the receiver,
resu lting in consid erable station changing, mixing and
distortion.
