Driving Your Explorer
RWARN ING
The Anti-lock system does NOT assist the veh icle in
stop ping quickly on wet or icy surfaces. Heavy brak ing
combined with poor road condition s could cause you to
lose steerin g control of you r veh icle.
Using anti-lock brakes
The operation of a vehicle with 4WABS is not sim ilar to the
operation of norm al brakes. Some differences exist and are listed
below :
■
Ap ply the brake stead ily. In the event of a panic stop , do
NOT “p ump” the brakes. “Pu mping” the brakes during an
Anti-lock stop will diminish braking effectiveness.
■
Du ring an Anti-lock stop , the driver will notice a brake
pedal pulsation and hear som e noise from the engine
com partm ent. This is an ind ication that the 4WABS system is
working correctly and is norm al.
RWARN ING
The Anti-lock system does NOT decrease the tim e
necessary to apply the brak es. Alw ays leave enough room
betw een the veh icle in fron t of you and you r veh icle.
4WABS driver warning light
The 4WABS com puter continu ously monitors the system while
driving for any electrical fau lts or system malfu nctions. In
ad dition, the 4WABS com puter perform s an initial system check
called bu lb proveou t when the vehicle ignition is switched on.
Du ring bu lb proveou t, the ABS light on the instru ment cluster
will mom entarily illuminate and then go out.
NOTE: After startin g the veh icle and upon initial drive-off,
the driver may notice a sin gle pulse of the brak e
pedal and a noise from the engin e compartm ent. This
is part of the initial system check and is norm al.
