Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) System
(If equipped)
When you select the 4WD mod e, you r vehicle uses all four
wheels to pow er itself. This increases traction, enabling you to
drive you r 4x4 over terrain and road cond itions not travelled
norm ally by tw o-w heel drive vehicles.
Pow er is supplied to all four wheels throu gh a transfer case that
allow s you to select four-w heel drive when necessary. Method s
for engaging and disengaging 4WD and low range will depend
on which system you r vehicle has.
4WD Systems — Control Trac
The Control Trac 4WD system functions in three mod es. In
tw o-w heel drive mod e, pow er is delivered only to the rear axle.
The 4WD AUTO position provid es four-w heel drive with full
pow er delivered to the rear axle, and to the front axle as
requ ired for increased traction. The 4WD LOW position
provid es fou r-w heel drive with full pow er delivered to the front
and rear axles when above average pow er is requ ired at
red uced speed s.
Fou r-w heel drive operation (4WD LOW) on dry pavem ent is not
recom mend ed. Op erating the vehicle in 4WD LOW on dry
pavem ent will increase noise, vibration, tire wear, and decrease
fuel econom y.
Control Trac system indicator lights
A 4WD ind icator light and a 4WD LOW ind icator light are
located in the instru ment cluster. If either light flashes, take
you r vehicle in for service.
