Automatic Transmission Operation
4R44E/4R55E/4R70W
The 4R44E, 4R55E and 4R70W transm issions are electronically
controlled four speed overd rive au tom atic transm issions with
locku p torqu e converter. Transm ission operation is controlled by
the Pow ertrain Control Mod ule (PCM).
The PCM will au tom atically ad just transm ission operation to
make up for varying cond itions. Several sensors located on the
engine and transm ission such as throttle position, engine speed ,
vehicle speed and transm ission tem peratu re are used by the
PCM to shift the transm ission into a higher or low er gear when
requ ired for the best perform ance and fuel econom y. For
exam ple, you may notice that the transm ission will upshift to a
higher gear more qu ickly when the vehicle has not reached
norm al operating tem peratu re.
The PCM also controls the transm ission’s Torqu e Converter
Clu tch (TCC) to further raise vehicle perform ance and fuel
econom y. The TCC will engage when the transm ission operating
tem peratu re and other cond itions determ ined by the PCM have
been met. Engagem ent of the clutch may be noted as a decrease
in engine speed .
To help in trou bleshooting, the PCM continu ally perform s
self-tests on the electronic control system and , if any fau lts are
detected , stores them in memory. The Overd rive Off Ind icator
Light (O/ D OFF), which is located on the instru ment cluster,
may flash stead ily if a malfu nction has been detected . If the
