If the ignition switch is in the ON position and any door or the
liftgate is not com pletely closed , the light will illuminate.

Check Engine Warning Light
The Pow ertrain On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD II) system consists
of the hard ware and softw are necessary to monitor the
operation of the pow ertrain. The OBD II system is designed to
check the function of the vehicle’s pow ertrain control system
during norm al operation. If an emission problem is detected , the
Check Engine Warning Light (in the cluster) is tu rned on.
Mod ification or ad ditions to the vehicle may cau se incorrect
operation of the OBD II system . Ad ditions such as bu rglar
alarm s, cellu lar phones, and CB rad ios must be carefu lly
installed . Do not install these devices by tap ping into or ru nning
wires close to pow ertrain control system wires or com ponents.
The light com es on briefly when you tu rn the ignition key to
the ON position, bu t it shou ld tu rn off when the engine cranks.
If the light does not com e on when you tu rn the ignition to the
ON position or if it com es on and stays on when you are
driving, have you r vehicle serviced as soon as conveniently
possible. This ind icates a possible problem with one of the
engine’s emission control system s. You do not need to have
you r veh icle tow ed in.
