To shift from 4WD AUTO or 2WD to 4WD LOW:
Stop the vehicle, depress the brake and place the au tom atic
transm ission in N (Neutral) or depress the clutch on vehicles
with a manu al transm ission. Rotate the 4WD switch on the
instru ment panel to 4WD LOW. Both the 4WD and 4WD LOW
lights are now lit.
For Explorers equ ipped with Au tom atic Ride Control:
After shifting to 4WD LOW, wait abou t 90 second s. This will
improve grou nd clearance and off-road hand ling. Refer to
Automatic Ride Control in the Featu res chap ter.
To shift from 4WD LOW to 4WD AUTO or 2WD:
Stop the vehicle, depress the brake and place the au tom atic
transm ission into N (Neutral) or depress the clutch on vehicles
with a manu al transm ission. Rotate the 4WD switch on the
instru ment panel to 4WD AUTO or 2WD.
It is not recom mend ed to operate the vehicle in the 4WD mod es
with a tem porary spare. If 4WD operation is necessary, do not
operate at speed s above 10 mph or for distances above 50 miles.
Extend ed operation in 4WD with a tem porary spare may resu lt
in dam age to drivetrain com ponents.
All-Wheel Drive System (If equipped)
If you r vehicle is equ ipped with All-Wheel Drive (AWD), pow er
is constantly supplied to all four wheels throu gh a transfer case.
The AWD system is full-tim e and has no external controls.
The AWD transfer case utilizes a viscou s clutch that distribu tes
torqu e to the front and rear differentials (ap proxim ately 35%
front and 65% rear). The viscou s clutch is filled with a
high-viscosity fluid, see Lubricant Specifications in the Servicing
Your Explorer chap ter for more inform ation.
