1996 Ford Explorer Owners Manual

Op erate  you r  vehicle  within   reasonable    limits.  Sudden
acceleration,   deceleration,    tu rning,  or  com binations   of  these
maneu vers   can  cau se a  vehicle   to  behave  differently    than
anticip ated .
Wheel Spin
Extrem e  acceleration   can  cau se  the  rear  wheels   to  spin,
perhap  s resu lting   in  red uced  steering   control.
If the   wheels  spin,   use  2  (Second  gear)   to  gain  traction.   Move
forw ard  slow ly  and  evenly.   If  this  does   not  work,   try  rocking
the  vehicle.
For  4x4  vehicles,  engage   4WD,  and   try  to  drive   aw ay.
High Speed  Driving
Ford  Motor   Com pany  recom  mend s  obeying   posted   speed  limits.
RWARN ING
Drivin g  too  fast  for  condition  s creates   the  possib ility   of
loss  of  veh icle control.   Drivin g  at  very  high  speed  s for
exten ded  period  s of  tim e may  resu lt  in  damage   to veh icle
components.
Speed  limiter
All  mod els  are  equ ipped   with  a  Pow ertrain   Control   Mod ule
(PCM)  which   limits  the  maxim  um  engine   speed   and  thu s  road
speed   in  top  gear.  Vehicle   operation   is  norm al  since  the
controlled   maxim um   speed   is above   posted   highw ay  speed  s in
North   Am erica.
