Driving Your Explorer
RWARN ING
Hold the brak e pedal down while you move the gearsh ift
lever from position to position . If you do not hold the
brak e pedal down, you r veh icle may move unexpected ly
and injure som eon e.
Once you place the gearshift secu rely into position, grad ually
release the brake pedal and use the accelerator as necessary.
NOTE: Your veh icle is equipped with a brak e-sh ift interlock
featu re. This featu re preven ts you from shiftin g from
P (Park ) unless you have the brak e pedal depressed .
(The ign ition must be in the ON position .) If you
cannot shift from P (Park ) with the brak e pedal
depressed :

Ap ply the parking brake.
Remove the key.
Insert the key and rotate it one position clockw ise (ignition
in the OFF position).

Ap ply the brake pedal and shift to N (Neutral). (If the
vehicle is shifted back to P [Park], you must rep eat the
previou s step s.)
5.
Start the vehicle.
If you need to shift ou t of P (Park) by using the alternate
proced ure described above, it is possible that a fuse has blow n
and that you r brakelam ps may also not be functional. Please
refer to the chap ter titled Servicing Your Explorer in this Ow ner
Guide for instru ctions on checking and rep lacing fuses.
