Manual Transmission Operation
Using the Clutch
Make sure the gearshift lever is in the N (Neutral) position and
you r right foot is hold ing dow n the brake pedal. Then press the
clutch pedal to the floor with you r left foot. Manu al
transm ission vehicles have a starter interlock switch. The starter
will not crank until the clutch pedal is fully depressed . Start the
engine and allow it to idle for a few second s. Move the
gearshift into 1 (First) or R (Reverse).
To move the vehicle, release the clutch slow ly and at the sam e
tim e press dow n slow ly on the accelerator so that the vehicle
accelerates.
Do not drive with you r foot resting on the clutch pedal and do
not use the clutch to hold you r vehicle at a stand still while
waiting on a hill. These actions will seriou sly red uce clutch life.
Driving with you r foot resting on the clutch may cau se the
vehicle to jerk sharp ly when pressing or rem oving you r other
foot from the accelerator.
Shifting the Gears
The gearshift for a manu al transm ission is mounted on the floor.
The gearshift pattern consists of seven positions: Neutral, five
forw ard gears, and Reverse.
