R (Reverse)
With the gearshift in the R (Reverse) position, the vehicle will
move backw ard . You shou ld alw ays com e to a com plete stop
before shifting into or ou t of R (Reverse).
N (Neutral)
With the gearshift in the N (Neutral) position, the vehicle can be
started and is free to roll. Hold the brake pedal dow n while in
this position.
Driving
When to use j (Overdrive)
This is the norm al driving position. As the vehicle picks up
speed , au tom atic upshifts to second , third and fourth gears will
occur when j Overd rive is chosen on the selector and the
transm ission control switch has not been pressed . The
transm ission will shift into the correct gear when the right
speed is achieved , for the accelerator pedal position you have
chosen.
When to use Drive
You will note there is not a drive position on you r gearshift
ind icator. How ever, you will find a transm ission control switch
labeled O/ D ON / OFF located on the end of the gearshift lever.
Press this switch and the O/ D OFF ind icator light will
illuminate on the instru ment cluster. With overd rive cancelled
and the O/ D OFF ind icator light illuminated , the transm ission
will operate in gears one throu gh three. This is usefu l if you
exp erience frequ ent dow nshift/ upshift cond itions, when
operating with a heavy load or in hilly terrain, or if ad ditional
engine braking is usefu l. How ever, shift back to j (Overd rive)
whenever practical for optim um pow ertrain cooling and fuel
econom y. This can be accom plished by pushing the transm ission
control switch again, to cancel the O/ D OFF control and light.
