Safety Belts for Children
Child ren who are too large for child safety seats shou ld alw ays
wear safety belts. (See instru ctions with you r child seat, or
contact its manu factu rer, to determ ine maxim um size of child
that will safely fit in the seat.)
RWARN ING
If safety belts are not prop erly worn and adjusted as
describ ed, the risk of seriou s injury to the child in a
collision will be much greater.
If the shou lder belt portion of one of the lap and shou lder belts
can be positioned so that it does not cross or rest in front of the
child ’s face or neck, the child shou ld wear the lap and shou lder
belt. Moving the child closer to the center of the vehicle may
help provid e a good shou lder belt fit.
To improve the fit of lap and shou lder belts on child ren who
have outgrow n child safety seats, Ford recom mend s use of a
belt-p ositioning booster seat that is labelled as conform ing to all
Federal motor vehicle safety stand ard s. Belt-positioning booster
seats raise the child and provid e a shorter, firm er seating
cushion that encou rages safer seating postu re and better fit of
lap and shou lder belts on the child . A belt-p ositioning booster
shou ld be used if the shou lder belt rests in front of the child ’s
face or neck, or if the lap belt does not fit snu gly on both
