Engine Coolant
Checking the engine coolant
NOTE: Be sure to read and understan d Precautions When
Servicing Your Vehicle at the begin ning of this chapter.
Your vehicle’s engine coolant protects the engine from
overheating in the summer and from freezing in the winter.
Check the level of the engine coolant at least once a month, bu t
preferably each tim e you stop for fuel. Simply look at the
engine coolant recovery reservoir located in the engine
com partm ent. To locate this reservoir, see the diagram of you r
vehicle’s engine und er Engine types in this chap ter.
If the engine coolant has not been checked for a long period of
tim e the engine coolant reservoir may eventu ally empty. If the
engine coolant reservoir empties, check the engine coolant level
in the rad iator. Read the follow ing warnings before rem oving
the rad iator cap . If it is necessary to fill the rad iator, refer to the
Engine Coolant Refill Procedure in this chap ter for instru ctions.

Never rem ove the coolan t recovery cap while the engin e
is running or hot.

Before you rem ove the rad iator cap , tu rn the engine off and
let it cool. Even when the engine is cool, be carefu l when
you rem ove the rad iator cap .
When the engine is cool, wrap a thick cloth arou nd the cap
and tu rn it slow ly cou nterclockw ise to the first stop .
