Starting Your Explorer
Before you start you r vehicle, you shou ld test the warning lights
on the instru ment panel to make sure that they work. Refer to
the Warning Lights and Gauges chap ter.
Starting Your Engine
To start you r engine:

Follow the step s und er Preparing to Start Your Vehicle at the
beginning of this section.

Turn the ignition key to the ON position.
DO NOT depress the accelerator pedal when starting you r
engine. DO NOT use the accelerator while the vehicle is
parked .

Turn the key to the START position (cranking) until the
engine starts. Allow the key to retu rn to the ON position
after the engine has started .
If you have difficulty in tu rning the key, rotate the steering
wheel slightly becau se it may be bind ing.
For a cold engin e:

At tem peratu res 10˚F (-12˚C) and below : If the engine does
not start in fifteen (15) secon ds on the first try, tu rn the key
to OFF, wait ap proxim ately ten (10) second s so you do not
flood the engine, then try again.
■
At tem peratu res above 10˚F (-12˚C): If the engine does not
start in five (5) secon ds on the first try, tu rn the key to OFF,
wait ap proxim ately ten (10) second s so you do not flood the
engine, then try again.
