Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)
We have all seen a car or a tru ck that is load ed dow n in the
rear and rid ing high in the front. This is a dangerou s cond ition
that usually means that the rear suspension com ponents are
und er severe strain and that vehicle hand ling is impaired . There
is more to carrying a load than just payload or GVWR.
Your Safety Com pliance Certification Label not only gives the
GVWR, it also gives the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)
which is the carrying cap acity for each axle system . For tru cks,
the rear axle will be designed to carry more weight than the
front.
The rating is based on the carrying cap acity of the lowest rated
axle and suspension component as well as other factors. This is
why it’s so important to observe vehicle load ing ratings.
Overload ing a vehicle punishes com ponents and can lead to
shortened service life or ou tright failu re.
The cap acity of the tires is inclu ded as part of the axle and
suspension system , which is to be consid ered when determ ining
the low est rated com ponent. Tires are rated to carry a specific
maxim um load at a specific maxim um tire pressu re.
Passenger car typ e tires when installed on light tru cks and
multip urp ose passenger vehicles are rated at 10% low er load
carrying cap acity due to the differences in vehicle usages.
The vehicle must not be load ed to both the front and rear
GAWR becau se the GVWR will be exceed ed. The GAWR of the
front and rear axles exceed s the GVWR when ad ded together to
allow flexibility in fore and aft load ing of cargo.
With the tires inflated to the specified pressu re the total weight
of you r vehicle must not exceed the GVWR and GAWR
specified on the Safety Com pliance Certification Label. This
inclu des full fuel tank(s), vehicle equ ipment, and occupants as
well as the cargo load .
