OFF allow s you to shu t off the engine and all accessories
withou t locking the steering wheel or the au tom atic
transm ission gearshift lever.
ON allow s you to test you r vehicle’s warning lights (excep t the
brake system warning light) to make sure they work before you
start the engine. The key retu rns to the ON position once the
engine is started and rem ains in this position while the engine
ru ns.
START cranks the engine. Release the key once the engine starts
so that you do not dam age the starter. The key shou ld retu rn to
ON when you release it. The START position also allow s you to
test the brake warning light.
Ignition Key Buzzer or Chime
The bu zzer or chim e will sou nd if you open the driver’s door
while the key is in the ignition. Never leave you r vehicle
unattend ed with the key in the ignition.
Removing the Key From the Ignition
Proced ures for rem oving you r key from the ignition will vary,
depend ing on the typ e of gearshift you r vehicle has. Gearshift
levers may be mou nted on the steering colu mn or on the floor
or console.
If you have a manu al transm ission, you have a key release lever
which allow s you to rem ove you r key from the ignition. The
key release lever is on the upper right of the steering colu mn,
just above the key lock cylind er.
If your vehicle’s gearshift lever is mounted on the
column:

Pu t the gearshift in P (Park).
Set the parking brake fully before rem oving you r foot from
the service brake. (This will avoid “bind ing” or “load ing” the
park gear if you park on a grad e.)
